Whenever we think of the perfect holiday destination, Bulgaria
seldom pops up in top position on our wish lists. Having said this,
the popularity of Bulgaria as a holiday destination has increased
dramatically in recent years, due to the wide range of resorts, easy
transport links and cheap cost of living.
Getting to Bulgaria
Transport links to Bulgaria are particularly good. There are four
international airports in Bulgaria: Sofia, Plovdiv, Varna and
Bourgas, all of which have regular flights from other capital
cities. Flights from London take approximately 3 hours and arrive on
a daily basis.
The national carrier for Bulgaria is the recently renamed Bulgaria
Air, previously known as Balkan Air Tour. Sofia flights arrive from
the UK daily and Varna flights operate at least three times a week.
Those considering flying to Bulgaria should also consider British
Airways, as they offer flights from Europe and the United States to
both Sofia and Varna. The internal air carrier, Hemus Air, offers
link flights between airports and also provides excellent
communications, at a reasonable price, with the rest of Europe
(London included).
As well as air travel, there are excellent national and
international rail links. Most of the trains do travel through
Sofia, so it is perfectly feasible for visitors to make their way
from the capital to any of the costal resorts, within a matter of a
couple of hours.
Despite being a coastal country, Bulgaria does not have an extensive
sea transport system in place connecting it to other countries in
Europe. Most of the links are with other countries in the
Mediterranean basin and Russian ports. Having said this, the
commercial ports are highly active and some real bargains can be
found.
Legalities
Visiting Bulgaria on holiday should present few difficulties for
most standard visits, provided that you do not stay in the country
for more than 30 days, in any 6-month period. Residents of the USA,
Canada, New Zealand, Australia and EU countries are all included
within this rule.
Different Resorts
One of the reasons that Bulgaria has become so popular, as a holiday
destination, is due to the wide variety of holiday resorts
available. Whilst the coastal resorts have some of the best beaches
in Europe, there are also mountain resorts that can offer unrivalled
skiing. Combine this with a rich and colourful cultural and
historical background and it is easy to see why Bulgaria has become
the holiday destination of choice for thousands of holidaymakers.
Costal resorts offer exceptional bathing conditions, golden sands
and clean, calm waters, ideal for the younger visitors. As well as a
pleasant average temperature of 26 degrees Celsius, the new resorts,
being built at an impressive rate, offer luxurious living at
rock-bottom prices. For the more active visitors, most resorts have
a wide range of sporting and entertainment facilities readily
available.
Skiing is also considered world class in Bulgaria, with the season
starting in mid December and going all of the way through to May, in
some of the higher locations. Bansko is currently the most popular
of the skiing resorts combining modern ski technology with rich
history, although Borovets should not be overlooked, with over 40km
of pistes to choose from. Other picturesque ski resorts include
Chepelare and Pamparova.
Other specialist holiday operators make the most of the country’s
rich history and include trekking holidays, as well as health spa
breaks, as the coastal area is thought to be an excellent area to
conduct natural healing.
There is no doubt that whatever your pleasure, you will find a
holiday to remember, in Bulgaria. After Bulgaria joins the EU in
2007, it is likely that its infrastructure will improve and yet more
people will flood to the country in search of a dream holiday, at a
fraction of the price.
